The
new fiberglass wing tips extend just 6 inches beyond the ends of the spars,
versus 18 inches for the earlier tube-and-fabric tips. The two foot reduction
in wing span yields higher cruise and top speeds, with resulting gains
in fuel economy. Importantly, because of the shape of the new tips the
Challenger still retains its low stall speed. Also, the tips attach in
such a way as to stiffen the outer portion of the wing. This gives the
ailerons a better bite, for more rapid roll initiation and, together with
the shorter span, a faster roll rate. |
